The port is an active industrial port and therefore generally closed to the public. From the Malecón (waterfront promenade) in Cárdenas, however, the cranes and ships in the harbor basin can be seen.

The Malecón in Cárdenas is the best place to observe port activity, especially near the old customs house. From the bridge at the western end of the bay, there is a good view of the entrance and loading piers.
