Cárdenas, known as the City of Flags (Ciudad de las Banderas), is located on the northern coast of Matanzas Province. Founded on March 8, 1828, the city quickly grew into a wealthy sugar-trading center thanks to its busy port. It holds great historical significance as the place where the modern Cuban national flag was first raised in 1850 by Venezuelan General Narciso López. The urban design follows a precise grid pattern with wide avenues, giving it an exceptionally organized appearance. Cárdenas is also famous as the city of bicycles, as this mode of transport remains central to the residents' daily lives. Nearby lies the Hicacos Peninsula and the world-famous resort of Varadero, for which Cárdenas serves as a vital logistical base. The Oscar María de Rojas Museum, one of Cuba's oldest, houses valuable historical and scientific collections. The city's industrial heritage is also linked to rum production and shipbuilding.
