The Fortress of Cojímar, located east of Havana, is an integral component of the historic defense network protecting the Cuban capital. Constructed in 1649, this small fortification was designed to guard the mouth of the Cojímar River against pirate incursions and enemy naval forces. During the British invasion of Havana in 1762, the fort was nearly leveled, only to be later rebuilt by the Spanish as part of a reinforced perimeter of coastal batteries. The site achieved global recognition through its association with Ernest Hemingway, who used the fishing village of Cojímar as the setting for his masterpiece, 'The Old Man and the Sea.' Today, the fort stands as a significant example of colonial military architecture, offering scenic views of the bay and the local fishing harbor.
