Fortaleza de la Cabaña (Cuba)

Weather…

The Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña is the largest Spanish colonial fortress in the Americas. Constructed between 1763 and 1774 on the eastern side of Havana's harbor entrance, it was built following the brief British occupation of the city. The Spanish Crown commissioned the massive structure to ensure that the strategic ridge of La Cabaña could never again be used by an enemy to bombard Havana. The fortress is renowned for its imposing limestone walls, deep dry moats, and intricate bastion systems. Throughout its history, it has functioned as a military headquarters, a barracks, and a high-security prison. Havana’s most famous tradition, the 'Cañonazo de las nueve' (9 PM Cannon Shot), takes place here nightly as soldiers in 18th-century regalia fire a ceremonial cannon, a tradition that once signaled the closing of the city walls. Today, the site is a UNESCO World Heritage monument and a cultural center hosting museums and major international fairs.
