Suwarrow (Cook Islands)

Weather…

Suwarrow is a remote and pristine coral atoll in the northern Cook Islands, distinguished as the country's first national park since 1978. Comprised of around 40 small motus surrounding a wide, crystal-clear lagoon, it is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and solitude. The atoll gained global fame through the New Zealand hermit Tom Neale, who lived on the main islet of Anchorage for a total of 16 years during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, documenting his experiences in his memoir "An Island to Oneself." Today, the atoll remains uninhabited, except for two park rangers stationed there during the cyclone-free season to manage visiting yachts. Suwarrow is an internationally recognized Important Bird Area, serving as a vital breeding ground for thousands of sooty terns, frigatebirds, and boobies. The lagoon's waters are teeming with marine life, most notably a high concentration of grey reef sharks and manta rays. Accessible only by private yacht or occasional expedition vessels, Suwarrow features a rare opportunity to experience a truly untouched wilderness in the heart of the Pacific.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to this remote national park is strictly by private yacht or occasional expedition ships. Visitors must acquire a permit in advance and formally clear customs in Rarotonga or Aitutaki before sailing to the atoll.
📅
Best season
The park is typically only open and accessible during the cyclone-free season, which runs from mid-April to November. Outside these months, caretakers leave the island, and visiting is extremely dangerous and strictly forbidden.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The atoll features pristine low-lying coral islets surrounding a vast, deep lagoon. The landscape consists entirely of white sand beaches, coral rubble, and dense coastal shrubs offering vital nesting grounds for seabirds.
🎒
What to bring
Complete self-sufficiency is absolutely mandatory, including all food, drinking water, medical supplies, and shelter. Bring high-quality snorkeling gear, binoculars for bird watching, and reef-safe sun protection.
🅿️
Parking
Yachts anchor inside the deep, protected lagoon under the strict guidance of the resident park caretakers. There is no infrastructure, so proper ground tackle and careful anchoring practices are required to protect the delicate corals.
⚠️
Safety
You must adhere strictly to quarantine rules to avoid introducing invasive species to the fragile bird colonies. Beware of aggressive sharks in the lagoon passes and respect the isolation, as medical evacuation is incredibly difficult.
⏱️
Time needed
Depending on cruising permits and weather windows, visitors typically anchor here for three days to two weeks. A typical day involves several hours of guided nature walks, snorkeling, and observing the immense wildlife populations.
