Para-O-Tane Palace (Cook Islands)

Weather…

Para-O-Tane Palace, also known as Makea Palace, is a historic building in Avarua, Rarotonga. It served as the official residence of the Makea Ariki, paramount chiefs of the Cook Islands. Constructed in the late 19th century (completed around 1850s-1860s), the palace reflects a blend of colonial and traditional Polynesian architecture. Local limestone and timber were used in its construction. The building functioned as a government and ceremonial center during the early period of European contact. After decades of neglect, it was restored in the 1990s and now operates as a museum. The palace houses artifacts and documents that chronicle the history of the Makea dynasty and the islands' colonial past.
