Arorangi is a historic village on the western coast of Rarotonga, recognized as the cradle of Christianity in the Cook Islands. Founded in 1828 by the missionary Papeiha, it was the first mission village established after the local people were encouraged to relocate from inland valleys to the coast. The village's focal point is the Cook Islands Christian Church, a striking structure built from coral limestone and adorned with intricate wood carvings. Arorangi has long been the seat of the Tinomana Ariki, the high chief of the Puaikura district. Located in the hills above the village is the Highland Paradise Cultural Centre, set on the site of an ancient mountain fortress, offering deep insights into pre-colonial traditions and ancestral history. For travelers, the village is a prime location for witnessing spectacular Pacific sunsets over the tranquil lagoon. Its blend of religious heritage, tribal authority, and natural beauty makes Arorangi a vital cultural heart of the island.
