São Filipe is the capital of Fogo Island and is widely regarded as one of the most elegant towns in Cape Verde. It is perched on a 100-meter-high cliff overlooking a black lava sand beach, offering an unparalleled view of the massive volcanic cone of Pico do Fogo. The historic center, known as 'Bila,' is famous for its well-preserved sobrados, grand colonial manor houses with wooden balconies that reflect the former wealth of the island's landed aristocracy. Founded in the 16th century, it is the second oldest settlement in the archipelago after Ribeira Grande on Santiago. A devastating fire in 1922 destroyed parts of the town, but the subsequent reconstruction carefully maintained its colonial character. Today, São Filipe serves as the administrative and cultural heart of the island, featuring a lively central market, an imposing Catholic church, and a regional museum. The black sand beaches beneath the cliffs are a signature geographical feature, while the nearby airport connects the island to the rest of the archipelago.
