Gouveia Wind Farm (Cape Verde)

Weather…

The Gouveia Wind Farm on Santiago Island is a flagship project of Cape Verde's energy transition and part of the award-winning Cabeólica program. It was the first utility-scale commercial wind power project in sub-Saharan Africa funded through a public-private partnership. The facility consists of 11 high-performance Vestas V52 wind turbines, strategically positioned on the hills of Gouveia to optimize the capture of consistent northeastern trade winds. With an installed capacity of 9.35 megawatts, the farm makes a vital contribution to the base-load power supply of the capital city, Praia. By generating electricity locally from wind, Cape Verde has significantly reduced its reliance on expensive imported fossil fuels and cut CO2 emissions by thousands of tons annually. Technical maintenance is carried out according to international standards, employing local specialized personnel. The Gouveia Wind Farm is now regarded as a global model for sustainable energy infrastructure in small island developing states.
