Royal Fortress of São Filipe (Cape Verde)

Weather…

The Royal Fortress of São Filipe stands majestically about 120 meters above sea level and was constructed between 1587 and 1593 to defend Cidade Velha from enemy assaults. Its construction was prompted by devastating raids by English privateers, most notably Francis Drake, who sacked the then-capital Ribeira Grande in 1585. The fortress follows a classic star-shaped plan and was built using local basalt along with limestone imported from Portugal for architectural details. Inside the walls were barracks, a governor's palace, a chapel, and massive cisterns to ensure water supply during long sieges. After the decline of Cidade Velha, the complex fell into disrepair but was extensively restored in the 1960s and 1990s. Today, it serves as a prominent historical site offering panoramic views of the Atlantic and insight into colonial military strategy.
