Tarrafal is located at the northern tip of Santiago Island and is one of Cape Verde's most significant sites, blending natural beauty with a somber historical legacy. The town features one of the island's few white sand beaches, framed by the photogenic Tarrafal Bay and the towering Monte Graciosa. However, it is internationally recognized for the Tarrafal Concentration Camp (Campo de Tarrafal), established in 1936 by the Portuguese Estado Novo regime to imprison political dissidents. Today, the camp serves as a solemn museum and memorial dedicated to the resistance against colonial rule. Modern Tarrafal relies heavily on artisanal fishing and an expanding tourism sector, favored for its excellent diving conditions and mountainous hiking trails. The town's spirited fishing harbor and relaxed pace of life make it a cultural cornerstone of northern Santiago. As the terminus of the island's main highway, Tarrafal stands as the primary urban center for the northern region.
