Maio is located in the eastern group of the Cape Verde islands, south of Boa Vista, and covers an area of approximately 269 square kilometers. Geologically, it is recognized as the oldest island in the archipelago, evidenced by its heavily eroded and predominantly flat terrain. Its highest point, Monte Penoso, stands at only 436 meters above sea level. The island's identity is historically tied to its extensive salt pans near Porto Inglês, which for centuries facilitated a thriving salt trade with Europe and the Americas. Surprisingly, despite its arid climate, Maio hosts the largest reforested area in Cape Verde. In 2020, the island was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, acknowledging its importance as a habitat for nesting sea turtles and various migratory bird species. Its isolation has helped preserve a traditional way of life and pristine natural landscapes.

Getting there
The island is mostly reached by a short ferry ride or small domestic flights from the neighboring main island. Locally, there are taxis or rental cars available to get to the deserted beaches.
Best season
Maio enjoys sunny and dry weather almost all year round, convenient for extensive beach visits. The trade winds can blow a little stronger between December and March, bringing cool breezes.
Terrain & paths
The island's landscape is characterized by extensive, fine sandy beaches, dunes, and barren, flat plains inland. Walking along the coast is flat but can become tiring in the loose sand over time.
What to bring
Plenty of sunscreen, good sunglasses, and swimwear are the most important items to pack. Those who explore the extensive salt pans should wear closed-toe shoes for safety.
Parking
Vehicles can be parked practically anywhere without problems and free of charge, often right at the edges of the beach tracks. Just be careful not to get the car stuck in the deep sand.
Safety
The island is extremely laid-back and safe; crime is almost non-existent. When swimming, however, you should beware of strong undertows on completely unsupervised stretches of beach.
Time needed
To fully enjoy the seclusion and tranquility, many visitors stay for three to five days. Those who just want to check off the beaches and salt pans can manage it in one long day.
