Moncton lies in southeastern New Brunswick along the Petitcodiac River and is regarded as the economic hub of the Atlantic provinces. With about 80,000 residents in the city proper and more than 160,000 in Greater Moncton, it is the largest urban area in New Brunswick. Moncton is officially bilingual (English and French), with a large Acadian population, especially in its sister city of Dieppe. The city is famous for the unique tidal bore phenomenon, where ocean tides force a wave back up the Petitcodiac twice a day.
