Saint John lies where the Saint John River meets the Bay of Fundy and is Canada's oldest officially incorporated city, founded in 1785 by Loyalists from the United States. With around 70,000 residents, it is one of the most important port cities in the province of New Brunswick. The city is famous for the Reversing Falls, a unique natural phenomenon in which the enormous tides of the Bay of Fundy force the river to flow backward twice a day. Economically, Saint John is a heavyweight in the energy sector, hosting Canada's largest oil refinery, operated by Irving Oil. The historic downtown, lined with Victorian architecture, defines the cityscape.
