Fort Garry (Canada)

Weather…

Fort Garry, located at the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers in present-day Winnipeg, served as the administrative and economic hub for the Hudson’s Bay Company in Western Canada for decades. Built in 1835, Upper Fort Garry replaced earlier structures and became a vital post for the fur trade and the management of the Red River Colony. It was the site of significant historical events, most notably the Red River Resistance of 1869-1870 led by Louis Riel, which ultimately led to the formation of the province of Manitoba. During this period, the fort functioned as the seat of the Métis provisional government. As Winnipeg grew and the fur trade declined, the fort lost its prominence in the late 19th century and was largely demolished. Today, only the iconic northern stone gate remains as a physical testament to the once-imposing complex. The surrounding grounds have been developed into a heritage park that highlights the complex histories of Indigenous peoples, fur traders, and early settlers in the region.
