Fort Langley (Canada)

Weather…

Fort Langley, situated on the Fraser River in British Columbia, is often hailed as the 'Birthplace of British Columbia.' Established in 1827 by the Hudson’s Bay Company as a fur trade post, it played a critical role in securing British territorial claims on the Pacific coast. Beyond fur, the fort became a major export center for salted salmon and agricultural products shipped to Hawaii and California. The site's historical significance peaked in 1858 during the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush, when James Douglas officially proclaimed the Colony of British Columbia here to establish British law among thousands of prospectors. While the original wooden structures decayed over time, a portion of the fort was faithfully reconstructed in the 1950s. Today, it operates as a living history museum where visitors can experience the daily work of blacksmiths, coopers, and traders. The heritage buildings and interpreters provide a vivid look into 19th-century life and the strategic importance of trade in the expansion of the Canadian West.
