Craigdarroch Castle (Canada)

Weather…

Craigdarroch Castle in Victoria, British Columbia, is a magnificent example of Victorian architecture from the 'Bonanza' era. It was built between 1887 and 1890 for Robert Dunsmuir, a Scottish immigrant who became the wealthiest man in Western Canada through coal mining on Vancouver Island. The castle was designed in the Baronial style and features 39 rooms across more than 2,300 square meters of floor space. Robert Dunsmuir died in 1889 before the building was completed, leaving his wife Joan to finish the construction. The interior is renowned for its intricate woodwork in oak, mahogany, and cedar, as well as one of North America's finest collections of Victorian stained glass. Over the decades, the building has served as a military hospital, the Victoria College, and the conservatory of music. Since 1979, it has been managed by the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society and is designated as a National Historic Site of Canada.
