The Source of the Nile at Rutovu in Burundi is recognized as the southernmost and most distant source of the world's longest river. Historically, finding the source of the Nile was one of the greatest mysteries in the history of exploration, and the Burundian site was marked in the 20th century by a symbolic stone pyramid commissioned by German explorer Burkhart Waldecker. The surrounding area features rolling highlands and pine reforestation projects that have partially replaced the original montane vegetation. Geographically, this point marks the continental divide between the Nile and Congo basins. Today, the site is a significant national landmark and a major tourist destination for those wishing to appreciate the spiritual and geographic weight of this tiny stream.
