SOSUMO Sugar Factory (Burundi)

Weather…

SOSUMO (Société Sucrière du Moso) is the sole sugar refinery in Burundi, located in the Rutana Province in the southeastern part of the country. Established in 1982 and operational since 1988, the company was created to mitigate the nation's reliance on imported sugar. The factory is situated in the Moso plain, where the hot climate and fertile riverine soils provide good conditions for large-scale sugarcane cultivation. As a state-controlled enterprise, SOSUMO employs thousands of people directly and indirectly, serving as a primary engine for regional development in a relatively remote part of the country. Beyond sugar production, the plant produces molasses as a byproduct, which is vital for various local industrial applications. In recent years, there have been concerted efforts to modernize the facility and expand the plantation areas to meet rising domestic demand. SOSUMO remains a strategically indispensable component of Burundi's agro-industrial sector.
