Ntsweng Heritage Site (Botswana)

Weather…

The Ntsweng Heritage Site, located near Molepolole, was the ancestral capital of the Bakwena people from 1864 until its abandonment in 1937. Under the reign of Kgosi Sechele I, a remarkably influential leader, Ntsweng emerged as a formidable center of resistance against Boer encroachment in the mid-19th century. The site preserves the royal cemetery, containing the remains of Sechele I, along with foundations of both traditional Tswana huts and late 19th-century European-style stone buildings. In 1937, the settlement was vacated following a directive by the colonial administration and Kgosi Kgari Sechele II, leading the residents to relocate to present-day Molepolole. Ntsweng now serves as a significant archaeological protected area, documenting the lineage of Bakwena royalty, their military defenses, and the early socio-cultural interactions with Western missionaries and traders.
