Brčko is a significant port city in northeastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, unique for its special legal status as a neutral district. Situated directly on the banks of the Sava River, the city serves as the country's most important river port and a central trade hub between Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia. The history of Brčko is deeply intertwined with river trade, which led to rapid urban and industrial growth in the 19th century under Austro-Hungarian administration. A defining feature is the status of the Brčko District, established in 1999 following the Dayton Agreement as a condominium of both entities, directly under state authority. The cityscape is characterized by a blend of Ottoman architecture, representative buildings from the Danube Monarchy, and modern structures. Among its most famous landmarks is the City Hall, built in a pseudo-Moorish style, symbolizing the city's multicultural heritage. Economically, Brčko thrives due to its free trade zone and its location along key European transport corridors.
