Chimi Lhakhang (Bhutan)

Weather…

Chimi Lhakhang, famously known as the Temple of Fertility, is a prominent Buddhist shrine in the Punakha District. It was built in 1499 by Ngawang Chogyal on a hillock that had been blessed by the eccentric saint Drukpa Kunley, known as the 'Divine Madman'. Drukpa Kunley is renowned for his unorthodox teaching methods and his use of phallus symbols to subdue evil demons. The temple is a major destination for couples seeking blessings for children and houses a wooden phallus used to bless pilgrims by tapping them on the head. The approach to the temple leads through pretty rice paddies and the village of Sopsokha, where houses are traditionally decorated with elaborate phallus paintings. Chimi Lhakhang features a simple yet powerful architecture and is surrounded by hundreds of colorful prayer flags. The temple's history is linked to the subduing of a local demoness, whom Drukpa Kunley is said to have trapped in the form of a dog. Today, the site remains a lively center of spiritual practice and cultural heritage.
