Puna Tsang Chhu (Bhutan)

Weather…

The Puna Tsang Chhu is one of Bhutan's major rivers. It is formed by the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers at Punakha Dzong. After this symbolic union, the river flows south through the districts of Wangdue Phodrang, Dagana, and Tsirang before reaching India, where it is known as the Sankosh and eventually flows into the Brahmaputra. The river has enormous hydroelectric potential, which is being harnessed through the construction of two large hydroelectric projects, PHEP I and PHEP II. These projects are of central importance to the Bhutanese economy, as the export of electricity to India is a main source of the country's revenue. The valley of the Puna Tsang Chhu is fertile and is used intensively for agriculture, especially for rice cultivation. The river shapes the landscape and the lives of the people in central and southern Bhutan.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The wide river is highly accessible from the adjacent major valleys, with main roads frequently running parallel. Bridges and established local paths offer direct and easy approaches to the broad riverbanks.
📅
Best season
The pleasant, temperate months of spring and autumn are entirely well-suited for visiting the broad river valley. Water levels systematically rise quite dramatically during the heavy summer monsoon rains.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The valley floor remains relatively wide and flat in many places, featuring sandy or pebble-strewn riverbanks. Agricultural fields and massive hydroelectric infrastructure line significant stretches of the watercourse.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable walking shoes, adequate sun protection, and a light windbreaker are usually sufficient for exploring the valley. Trekking poles can be somewhat helpful if descending steep, unmarked banks directly to the water.
🅿️
Parking
Ample parking is generally available near major bridges, nearby towns, and established scenic viewpoints along the river. Visitors can easily leave vehicles here to explore the confluence area thoroughly on foot.
⚠️
Safety
While the river often appears wide and deceptively calm, strong undercurrents exist, especially near hydroelectric facilities. Visitors should heed local signs and stringently avoid swimming in unauthorized zones.
⏱️
Time needed
Most casual travelers spend roughly one to two hours admiring the river near major cultural sites. Guided rafting excursions or much longer valley walks can effortlessly occupy a half or full day.
