Punakha Valley
The Punakha Valley, situated at a relatively low altitude of about 1,200 meters, enjoys a subtropical climate that makes it one of Bhutan's most fertile regions. It served as the country's winter capital until 1955 and remains the winter residence of the Je Khenpo, the chief religious abbot. The valley is defined by the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers, which converge at the Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan's most majestic fortresses. This dzong, built in 1637, is an architectural masterpiece and the site of many historic events, including royal weddings. The mild climate allows for two rice harvests per year, as well as the cultivation of oranges, bananas, and other fruits. The valley is also known for Chimi Lhakhang, a fertility temple dedicated to the eccentric saint Drukpa Kunley, the 'Divine Madman'.
