St. John's Parish Church (Barbados)

Weather…

St. John's Parish Church stands as one of the most iconic and visually impressive historical sites in Barbados, perched 800 feet above sea level on the edge of Hackleton's Cliff. The current building, a fine example of Gothic architecture, was completed in 1836 after the previous structure was leveled by a hurricane. The churchyard is famously the final resting place of Ferdinando Paleologus, a direct descendant of the last Byzantine Emperors, who lived on the island in the 17th century. Inside, the church features a magnificent pulpit carved from six different types of native wood and an intricate west window. The view from the lookout point behind the church is arguably the best on the island, offering a panoramic sweep of the rugged Atlantic coastline and the crashing waves of Bathsheba. Its combination of regal history, architectural beauty, and a dramatic cliffside setting makes it for history buffs and photographers alike.
