St. Martin’s Island, also known locally as 'Narikel Jinjira' (Coconut Island), is the only coral island in Bangladesh, located in the northeastern part of the Bay of Bengal. Covering an area of about 8 square kilometers, the island is famed for its pristine sandy beaches, turquoise waters, and thriving coral reefs. It is situated approximately 9 kilometers south of the Teknaf peninsula and is accessible only by boat or sea-truck during the tourist season. The coast of St. Martin's serves as a critical nesting ground for endangered sea turtles and supports a vast array of marine biodiversity, including various species of fish and mollusks. The southernmost point, known as Chera Dwip, becomes a separate islet during high tide and features the most intact coral formations. Despite its remote location, the island is a major hub for ecotourism, though environmental conservation remains a significant challenge for its delicate ecosystem.

Getting there
Getting there typically requires taking a multi-hour ferry ride from Cox's Bazar or Teknaf. The island itself is quite small and the coastal areas are usually accessed exclusively by foot or non-motorized transport.
Best season
The peak window for visits is usually between November and March when the sea is calmest and skies are sunny. During the monsoon season, high seas and heavy rainfall often suspend ferry services entirely.
Terrain & paths
The coastline features long stretches of white coral sand, scattered rocky reef outcrops, and swaying palm trees. Walking is generally very flat and relaxed, though moving through soft sand can be mildly tiring.
What to bring
Light tropical wear, reliable sun protection, and comfortable beach sandals are the standard attire. Snorkeling gear is highly recommended if you wish to observe the colorful underwater reef life just offshore.
Parking
There are strictly no motor vehicles allowed on the island, thus no parking is needed or available. Visitors typically leave their cars securely on the mainland at the ferry terminals before crossing over.
Safety
Swimmers should always be mindful of sharp coral fragments and sudden underwater drop-offs near the reefs. It is usually best to avoid swimming out too far, as ocean currents can sometimes become deceptively strong.
Time needed
Most travelers plan for a relaxing two to three-day getaway to fully experience the island's serene rhythm. Day trips from the mainland are technically possible but often feel extremely rushed due to ferry transit times.
