Rock Sound is a significant settlement in South Eleuthera, recognized for its unique geological features and its role as a regional commercial hub. The most famous landmark is the Ocean Hole, a large inland blue hole connected to the sea via subterranean tunnels, famously explored by Jacques Cousteau. Originally named Wreck Sound due to the numerous shipwrecks on the nearby reefs, the town eventually adopted a more inviting name as it developed. In the mid-20th century, the area saw significant investment from entrepreneur Juan Trippe, which led to the establishment of the Rock Sound International Airport and exclusive resorts. Today, the town provides critical infrastructure for the southern part of the island, including banks, grocery stores, and government offices. The surrounding geography is characterized by rolling hills and dramatic coastal cliffs that overlook the Atlantic. Historically, the area was a productive agricultural zone, especially for tomato and citrus farming during the colonial and post-colonial eras.
