Badger Den La Massana

The woodlands and alpine meadows of La Massana provide a sanctuary for the European badger (Meles meles), a master architect of the underground. These animals live in expansive burrow systems known as 'setts,' which consist of a network of tunnels and nesting chambers located deep beneath the roots of sturdy trees. A single sett can be over a century old, passed down and continuously expanded by successive generations of a badger clan. Badgers are highly social and remarkably tidy creatures, often clearing out old bedding and creating specific 'latrines' away from their living quarters to maintain hygiene. Though they are nocturnal and rarely seen by hikers during the day, their presence is marked by distinctive tracks and smoothed pathways through the undergrowth. As omnivores, badgers play a crucial role in Andorra's biodiversity, feeding on a varied diet of earthworms, fruits, and small rodents, while their digging activities help to aerate the mountain soil.
