Its history dates back to antiquity when it served as Cirta, the capital of the Numidian Kingdom and a pivotal trade hub. Following its destruction in 311 AD, it was rebuilt by Emperor Constantine the Great in 313 AD, from whom it derives its present name. Eight iconic bridges span the deep chasm, including the Sidi M'Cid suspension bridge, which was the highest in the world upon its completion in 1912.
