Rhön, Hessen, Bavyera ve Thüringen eyaletlerinin sınır bölgesinde yer alan ve volkanik kökeniyle şekillenmiş bir orta dağ silsilesidir. 1991'den beri bölge, eşsiz kültürel peyzajı ve biyolojik çeşitliliği korumak amacıyla UNESCO Biyosfer Rezervi olarak tanınmaktadır. Wasserkuppe, 950 metre ile Hessen'deki en yüksek noktadır ve bölgeye uluslararası ün kazandıran planör uçuşunun beşiği olarak kabul edilir. Rhön'ün karakteristik özelliği, geniş ve ağaçsız yüksek düzlükleridir, bu nedenle genellikle açık uzaklıklar diyarı olarak adlandırılır. Jeolojik açıdan dağlar, milyonlarca yıl önceki geçmiş volkanik faaliyetlerin tanıkları olan bazalt tepelerinden oluşur. From May to October, the vast, treeless meadows offer exceptional visibility for hikers and paragliding enthusiasts. Winter is notably frigid and snowy, attracting cross-country skiers to the meticulously groomed panoramic tracks.

Topography largely consists of sweeping, grass-covered plateaus punctuated by distinct, rounded basalt volcanic cones. The widespread paths are mostly broad, unpaved agricultural tracks offering very smooth and effortless ascents.

Because the highlands are notoriously devoid of significant tree cover, potent sun protection and steadfast windbreakers are always mandatory. Standard hiking boots are entirely sufficient for tackling the relatively forgiving grassy inclines.

Hikers will find well-distributed and adequately sized parking lots positioned at the foot of almost every major basalt peak. These spaces are incredibly practical but can become constrained during the highly popular autumn kite-flying weekends.

The complete lack of forest canopy means visitors are entirely exposed to unexpected thunderstorms, relentless winds, and intense UV rays. Maintaining distance from grazing livestock along the sprawling plateau pastures is strongly advised.

A thorough exploration of a specific cone and its surrounding scenic plateau normally takes a pleasant half-day. Experiencing the unique geological transitions across the entire region, however, genuinely warrants a long weekend trip.
