Mazabuka Sugar Estates (Zambia)

Weather…

The sugar estates of Mazabuka, primarily consisting of the Nakambala Sugar Estate, are the largest in Zambia and have earned the town the nickname 'The Sweetest Town in Zambia.' Located in the Southern Province near the edge of the Kafue Flats, the estates benefit from fertile alluvial soils and access to water from the Kafue River for intensive irrigation. Spanning tens of thousands of hectares, these plantations produce hundreds of thousands of tons of raw sugar annually for both domestic consumption and export. Historically, the Nakambala project began in the 1960s and fundamentally transformed the local economy from small-scale farming to a major industrial hub. The estate is a vital employer and supports an extensive network of social services, including schools and clinics for thousands of employees and their families. Today, the industry is increasingly adopting sustainable practices, including the use of sugarcane bagasse for renewable energy generation.
