Virginia Beach is an independent city located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Known for its long stretch of sandy beach, it is a popular tourist destination. The area's history dates back to the first landing of English colonists in the New World in 1607 at Cape Henry, before they settled at Jamestown. The modern city of Virginia Beach was formed in 1963 through the consolidation of Princess Anne County and the much smaller resort city of Virginia Beach, creating a large urban and suburban area. The city's economy is heavily driven by tourism, military bases such as Naval Air Station Oceana and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Fort Story, and agriculture. Its 3-mile-long boardwalk is a hub of activity, lined with hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues. In addition to the beach, the city also provides the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center and the First Landing State Park, which marks the site of the colonists' first landing. Virginia Beach holds the Guinness World Record for the longest pleasure beach in the world.
