The Port of Virginia, owned and operated by the Virginia Port Authority, is a major maritime port on the U.S. East Coast. It comprises several terminals in the Hampton Roads region, including Norfolk International Terminals (NIT), Portsmouth Marine Terminal (PMT), and Virginia International Gateway (VIG). One of its greatest strategic advantages is its naturally deep, ice-free harbor, boasting 50-foot shipping channels with projects underway to deepen them to 55 feet to accommodate the world's largest ships fully-laden. The port is home to superb intermodal connectivity through on-dock rail services provided by major East Coast railroads CSX and Norfolk Southern, offering one of the fastest routes to the Midwest. The Port of Virginia is one of the most technologically advanced in the U.S., featuring semi-automated stacking cranes at VIG that increase efficiency and turn times. It is a major catalyst for Virginia's economy, supporting a wide range of industries including agriculture, coal exports, and manufacturing.
