Pisgah National Forest covers over 500,000 acres of the heavily rugged, massive Southern Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina. It is profoundly significant as the absolute birthplace of modern scientific forestry in America; the massive Biltmore Estate heavily pioneered sustainable forest management here in the late 19th century, eventually establishing the first operational forestry school in the country. The forest's topography is visually staggering, featuring massive, heavily forested ridges, deep massive gorges, and some of the highest, most prominent peaks east of the Mississippi, including Mount Mitchell. The deeply lush environment is characterized by massive cascading waterfalls and incredibly diverse, dense hardwood forests.
