Laguna de Castillos Protected Area (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Laguna de Castillos Protected Area, located in the Rocha Department, is another important wetland ecosystem that is part of the Bañados del Este Biosphere Reserve. The lagoon is fed by the Valizas stream and has a connection to the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in a brackish water ecosystem. The area covers approximately 8,000 hectares and is known for its scenic landscape and rich biodiversity. A unique feature of the area is the Monte de Ombúes, a forest composed almost entirely of Ombú trees (Phytolacca dioica), which is a large herbaceous plant that looks like a tree. This forest is one of the very few of its kind in the world. The lagoon itself is a major habitat for waterfowl, including the black-necked swan, various duck species, and herons. The surrounding marshes are also home to the capybara, the world's largest rodent. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the unique Ombú forest and maintaining the water quality of the lagoon.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Spring (September-November) and early summer (December-February) offer the best conditions, with pleasant temperatures and many birds breeding. During the cooler months (June-August) capybaras are particularly active, though bird activity may be somewhat lower.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning, just after sunrise, is when both capybaras and waterbirds are most active. Late twilight is also excellent, as many animals come to the lagoon to drink.
📜
Etiquette
Keep at least 50 meters distance from capybaras to avoid stressing them. It is forbidden to feed the animals or make noise - stay on marked trails.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars are essential for observing the shy capybaras and birds from a safe distance. Sturdy footwear and insect repellent are highly recommended due to the damp environment and mosquitoes.
🧭
Getting there
The protected area is about 15 kilometers southeast of the city of Rocha, accessed via an unpaved road. Private transport is necessary; the final stretch may be muddy in wet weather.
🦌
What to expect
Capybaras often move in groups, but they can be very shy - expect them to flee into the water upon approach. Take your time and observe from cover to see natural behaviors.
