Karumbé Sea Turtle Center (Uruguay)

Weather…

The Karumbé Sea Turtle Center (Centro de Tortugas Marinas), based in La Coronilla, Rocha Department, is a non-governmental organization dedicated to the research and conservation of sea turtles in Uruguay. The name 'Karumbé' means 'turtle' in the Guaraní language. Founded in 1999, the organization plays a crucial role in rehabilitating injured or sick turtles found along the Uruguayan coast. Their rehabilitation center provides specialized care with the goal of releasing the animals back into the wild. Karumbé also conducts extensive research on the behavior, distribution, and threats facing sea turtles in the Southwest Atlantic waters. Five of the world's seven species of sea turtles have been recorded in Uruguayan waters, with the Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) being the most common. The center is heavily involved in community outreach and environmental education, working with local communities and schools to raise awareness about marine conservation.
