The Kilembe Copper Mines are situated in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains near Kasese and were once the backbone of Uganda's mining sector. Large-scale extraction of copper and cobalt ores began in the 1950s and reached its peak in the 1960s, when Uganda was one of Africa's most significant copper producers. During this era, Kilembe contributed massively to the country's export earnings and led to the rapid development of Kasese town and the railway line to Jinja. Due to political instability and falling global market prices, mining operations ceased in the late 1970s. In recent times, there have been renewed efforts by the Ugandan government to rehabilitate the mines and revitalize them through new investment. The remaining ore deposits are still considered substantial, and the mine remains a symbol of the industrial potential of Western Uganda.

What is this place?
The Kilembe Copper Mines at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains were once Uganda's largest copper producer. They are a historic industrial monument, testifying to the region's mining heritage.
Visiting
The mine site is not usually open to the public, but the old buildings and shafts can be viewed from the outside. Occasional tours are offered by local providers.
Where to view it
An excellent view of the mine complex is from the road leading to Rwenzori National Park. The entire area can be surveyed from the nearby hills.

Copper and cobalt ores are mined in the region, along with agricultural products like coffee from surrounding valleys. Handcrafted copper jewelry is available at local markets.

Active mining has ceased, but occasional exploration work takes place. Agricultural activity in the region is especially lively during the coffee harvest from October to December.
