The Katonga Bridge is a vital transport link on Uganda's busy Kampala-Masaka highway. It spans the Katonga River, a waterway known for its seasonal flooding. The bridge has suffered significant damage over the years, most notably from severe floods in May 2023 which caused its partial collapse and halted traffic for weeks. This incident highlighted the bridge's critical role in commerce, as it is a primary route for goods moving between Kampala and southwestern Uganda, as well as to neighbouring countries like Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania. In response to the recurring issues, Ugandan authorities have initiated the construction of a new, higher, and more resilient bridge to ensure long-term stability. The bridge is situated in a region rich in wetlands and holds significant ecological importance as part of the Katonga Wildlife Reserve.
