Makerere University Main Building (Uganda)

Weather…

The Makerere University Main Building, affectionately known as the 'Ivory Tower,' is the most iconic structure of Uganda's oldest and largest institution of higher learning. Completed in 1941, it was designed by British architect George L. Stanley, who also designed other notable colonial buildings in Uganda. Its design is characterized by its stark white facade, classical symmetry, and a distinctive clock tower, becoming a symbol of higher education across East and Central Africa. For decades, the building housed the university's key administrative offices, including the Vice-Chancellor's office. On September 20, 2020, a devastating fire destroyed a large part of the building, consuming irreplaceable historical records and archives. This event sparked an outpouring of national and international support for its reconstruction. Restoration efforts commenced with the goal of restoring its original architectural integrity while upgrading it with modern safety standards. The building is not just an administrative hub but a symbol of academic excellence and resilience in Africa.
