Medjez el-Bab is a historically significant town in the Béja Governorate, strategically positioned on the banks of the Medjerda River in northwestern Tunisia. Its name translates to Gateway of the Sabians, signifying its role as a vital crossroads between the capital city of Tunis and the western regions leading toward Algeria. In antiquity, the site was known as Membressa, and remnants of its Roman past, including bridge foundations, can still be observed. The town gained international prominence during World War II in 1943 as a focal point of intense fighting between Allied and Axis forces during the Tunisia Campaign. The Medjez el-Bab Memorial and War Cemetery, maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, commemorates over 3,000 soldiers who fell in the region. Today, the town serves as a major agricultural hub, utilizing the fertile alluvial soil of the Medjerda valley for extensive grain production and fruit orchards.
