Musti Archaeological Site (Tunisia)

Weather…

Musti, an archaeological site near the modern town of El Krib in northwestern Tunisia, was a significant Roman town located along the vital road connecting Carthage to Theveste. Originally a Numidian settlement, it flourished under Roman rule and was elevated to the status of municipium in the 2nd century AD. The site's most prominent landmark is the monumental triumphal arch built in 211 AD to honor Emperor Septimius Severus, which still stands as a testament to the city's former prestige. Excavations have revealed several temples dedicated to gods such as Apollo, Ceres, and Pluto, showcasing the religious life of its inhabitants. The central forum served as the administrative and social hub, surrounded by the foundations of various public buildings. During the Byzantine era, Musti was converted into a fortified post, and the remains of a Christian basilica point to its role as a regional bishopric. Today, Musti is appreciated for its quiet rural setting and its rich collection of Latin inscriptions that document the history of this ancient agricultural center.
