The Danyi Plateau is one of the most scenic and fertile regions in southwestern Togo, located in the Plateaux Region near the border with Ghana. Sitting at an average elevation of 700 to 800 meters above sea level, it enjoys a significantly cooler and more pleasant climate than the sweltering coastal lowlands. This geographical advantage makes the plateau a handy hub for growing coffee, cocoa, and a wide variety of temperate fruits and vegetables. The region is also famous for the Abbey of the Ascension (Abbaye de l'Ascension), a Benedictine monastery renowned for its unique architecture and locally produced natural medicines and crafts. The landscape features rolling hills, dense forests, and mist-covered peaks, giving it a near-alpine feel in the heart of West Africa. Geologically, the plateau is part of the Togo Mountains, composed of ancient metamorphic rocks. It serves as a key center for agrotourism, offering numerous hiking trails through pristine nature and traditional Danyi villages.
