Togoville lies on the northern shore of Lake Togo, opposite Aného, and is regarded as the birthplace of the modern state of Togo. It was here, on 5 July 1884, that the local king Mlapa III signed the 'protection treaty' with the German explorer Gustav Nachtigal, turning the territory into the German colony of 'Togoland'. The country owes its very name to this treaty, derived from the Ewe phrase 'to godo' ('beyond the water'). The town is also one of the most important Voodoo centres in West Africa: ceremonies in honour of the water spirits are held regularly on the lake's shores. Notable sights include the late 19th-century Catholic cathedral Notre-Dame du Lac Togo, which draws thousands of pilgrims each year, and a small history museum documenting the treaty signing. The economy is based on fishing, boat-building and a slowly growing heritage tourism that revolves around the town's spiritual and historical importance.
