Nong Khai is located in northeastern Thailand on the southern bank of the Mekong River, directly opposite the Laotian capital, Vientiane. The city serves as the most important gateway for trade and tourism between Thailand and Laos, especially since the opening of the first Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge in 1994. Historically, Nong Khai was a strategic border post and the site of numerous cultural exchanges for centuries. One of the most extraordinary attractions is Sala Keoku, a fantastic sculpture park with monumental concrete figures depicting Hindu and Buddhist myths. The temple Wat Pho Chai houses Luang Pho Phra Sai, a highly revered Buddha image that is at the center of celebrations during the Thai New Year festival, Songkran. A mysterious natural phenomenon, the Naga Fireballs, attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the Mekong every year at the end of the rainy season to see glowing orbs rising from the river.
