The Usambara Mountains in northeastern Tanzania are a key part of the Eastern Arc range, divided into the West and East Usambaras by the Lwengera Valley. The highest peak in the West Usambaras is Shagayu, rising to 2,262 meters, while the East Usambara range is lower but experiences higher humidity due to its proximity to the Indian Ocean. Geologically, these mountains are composed of ancient crystalline rocks formed about two billion years ago and uplifted through tectonic faulting 25 million years ago. The region became significant during the German colonial era (1885-1918), when the town of Lushoto was established as Wilhelmstal, serving as a mountain health resort and administrative hub. The area is a biodiversity hotspot, home to numerous endemic plants like the African violet (Saintpaulia) and featuring primary rainforests among the oldest on the continent. Today, the range is a popular trekking destination known for its diverse flora and spectacular vistas, such as the famous Irente Viewpoint.
