Usambara Mountains
The Usambara Mountains in northeastern Tanzania are part of the geologically ancient Eastern Arc Mountains and are renowned for their exceptional biodiversity. The range is divided into the West Usambaras, with the administrative center Lushoto, and the geologically older East Usambaras. Due to their long isolation, numerous endemic species have evolved here, leading the region to be frequently called the 'Galapagos of Africa.' The landscape is defined by dense montane rainforests, steep cliffs, and fertile valleys where tea and coffee are cultivated. During the German colonial era, Lushoto (then Wilhelmstal) was a popular mountain resort. Today, the mountains attract hikers who appreciate the cool mountain air and spectacular vantage points like Irente Viewpoint, which has a view over 1,000 meters down into the Maasai Steppe.
