Songo Songo Gas Field (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Songo Songo gas field is located on and offshore Songo Songo Island in the Kilwa District of the Lindi Region. It represents Tanzania's first major commercial natural gas discovery and forms the backbone of the nation's domestic electricity generation. Development began following its discovery in 1974, though commercial production only commenced in 2004 after significant infrastructure investment. The gas is transported via a 225-kilometer pipeline to Dar es Salaam, where it is primarily utilized at the Ubungo power plant for thermal electricity generation. Beyond energy production, the field supplies local industries and helps reduce the country's reliance on expensive imported liquid fuels. The project is operated by PanAfrican Energy Tanzania and has been instrumental in the economic development of the coastal region. The field's proven reserves have supported the country's industrial expansion for several decades.
