Koneswaram Temple (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Koneswaram Temple in Trincomalee, also known as the 'Temple of a Thousand Pillars,' is one of the most sacred Hindu shrines in Sri Lanka. Perched dramatically on Swami Rock, a towering cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its history spans over two millennia, and it is recognized in ancient scriptures as one of the five major Shiva abodes (Pancha Ishwarams) on the island. The original, magnificent temple complex was destroyed in 1624 by Portuguese colonial forces, who used the stone to build Fort Fredrick. Many of the sacred statues were submerged in the sea to protect them from destruction and were only rediscovered by divers in the 20th century. The current temple was rebuilt in the 1950s and is characterized by its colorful Dravidian architecture and a monumental golden statue of Lord Shiva. Koneswaram is not only a primary site for Hindu worship but also a major cultural landmark attracting visitors for its impressive vistas and its deep associations with the legend of King Ravana.
