Visiting
Arugam Bay is a public beach on the east coast of Sri Lanka, freely accessible at any time. The beach is a popular surfing spot, but also suitable for swimming and relaxing.
Typical hours
The beach is open 24 hours a day. The best time for surfing is early morning when winds are favourable and waves are at their best.
Photography
Photography is allowed anytime on the beach. Sunsets over the Indian Ocean provide spectacular subjects for landscape shots.
Time needed
Allow at least half a day for your stay to enjoy the beach and maybe rent a surfboard. Many visitors spend a whole day or even longer here.
Combine with
Combine a beach day with a trip to the nearby Kumana National Park or the Panama lagoons. Both are a short drive away and offer rich wildlife.
Getting there
Arugam Bay is about 320 kilometres east of Colombo and reachable by bus or taxi. The journey from Colombo takes approximately seven to eight hours.

Rent a surfboard directly on the beach for about five to ten euros per day. The waves are best from May to October, the main surfing season.
