Shambe Nature Reserve (South Sudan)

Weather…

Shambe Nature Reserve is a protected area in Jonglei State, South Sudan, east of the White Nile. Established in 1985, it covers 3,750 km² of seasonally flooded grasslands and wetlands. The reserve is part of the Nile floodplain ecosystem and supports large populations of white-eared kob, tiang, and zebras, as well as buffalo and hippopotamus. It is an important site for migratory birds, including species such as the black-crowned crane. During the civil war, poaching decimated wildlife numbers. Post-2011, conservation efforts have been implemented, including a ranger program. The reserve also provides critical dry-season grazing for cattle. In 2016, a survey counted 5,000 kob. There are no tourist facilities; access requires 4x4 vehicles. Fishing is a key livelihood for local communities along the rivers.
